Cataract Assessment and Management

WHAT IS CATARACT

It is the opacification of the normal clear lens within the eye. The condition occurs mainly as an aging process but can rarely occur due to other conditions like trauma, diseases of the eye or body. Occasionally, it can occur in children, as a developmental defect.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF CATARACT

The most common symptom is blurred or cloudy vision. Other complaints include rainbow halos, multiple images, glare and frequent change of glass.

TREATMENT

The treatment of cataract is the surgical removal of the natural cloudy lens followed by replacement with an artificial lens called IOL. Spectacles can help in the early stages but for the clearest vision, surgery has to be done.

TYPES OF SURGERY

Phacoemulsification: Phacoemulsification is the technique in which the cataract is broken down or emulsified with the help of ultrasound energy and the emulsified matter is aspirated through a very small cut or incision. A foldable IOL is then inserted into the eye. As the incision is small, no stitches are required and often, no injections.

Cold Phaco: Cold Phaco cataract removal technology uses instruments which do not build up heat which allow less trauma during surgery and an earlier return of vision

Micro Incisional Phacoemulsification (MICS): This is a type of cataract surgery in which the incision is less than 2mm. As the incision is so small there is less damage to the structures of the eye. It has the following advantages;

  1. Rapid Healing allowing a quick return to normal activities
  2. Lower astigmatism ( distortion)

TYPES OF INTRAOCULAR LENS:

We offer a variety of intraocular lenses that can be inserted after removable of the cloudy lens.

Regular Monofocal Foldable IOL

Premium IOLs

  1. Aspheric ( to reduce distortion / aberration)
  2. Toric IOL( to correct uneven power/astigmatism)
  3. Multifocal IOL( to correct both distance and near power)
  4. MICS IOL ( for cataract surgery with ultra-small incision size)

OUR FACILITIES INCLUDE
